Ways to Keep Trees Healthy
The most valuable and labor-intensive elements of our landscape are trees. They provide shade for our neighborhoods and homes, lowering energy costs. They boost property values, lessen soil erosion and air pollution, and offer wildlife habitat. They also make our daily lives more beautiful and serene.
It’s simple to overlook that trees need our care to thrive because they are such a tranquil, serene part of the background. A tree service must be hired for maintenance if you want your trees to keep growing and staying healthy. In light of this, the following are recommendations for maintaining healthy trees:
Plant the Right Tree
To guarantee that any tree will give you years of enjoyment, this is the first and one of the most important steps. Select a species well suited to your climate and the particular soil, light, and space requirements at the planting site. Visit your neighborhood nursery or Cooperative Extension System office for more details on the best trees for your area.
Remove Stakes Early
A tree’s trunk becomes stronger when it can sway in the wind. Use a two-stake system (one on either side of the root ball) with a loose, flexible tie in between to support the trunk of a new tree if it cannot stand on its own. Remove the stakes as soon as the tree can support itself on its own, ideally, after a year.
Keep the Grass Away
For air, water, and nutrients, the grass encroaching on the tree trunk competes with it (and usually wins the competition). When grass is allowed to grow right up against the trunks of young trees, in particular, it frequently stunts their growth. Maintain a mulched, grass-free area around the trunk for best results.
Water Properly
Even mature trees require watering during dry spells, and young trees require regular watering. Water deeply (2-3 feet deep for mature trees) to just outside the drip line, soaking the entire root zone (an imaginary line from outside the tree canopy down to soil level). Before you re-water the soil, let it partially dry out. Lawn sprinklers won’t be able to complete the task for you. Rarely do they wet deeply enough, which can lead to trees with shallow roots.
